Behind the Microscope: Pathologists and What They DoPathology and Laboratory Medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with determining the nature of diseases through analysis of body tissues and fluids. Pathologists examine tissue specimens taken from patients during surgery or by biopsy in order to make a diagnosis to determine prognosis and treatment. They examine cell preparations such as Pap smears, to find early signs of cancer. They perform autopsies to determine causes of death and to gain information about disease processes and the effects of treatment. Autopsies are important for education of both medical students and continuing medical education of physicians, and for quality improvement. Pathologists also contribute to the diagnosis of disease by measuring chemicals and cells in blood, sputum, bone marrow, and urine and by interpreting laboratory tests. Forensic pathology is concerned with obtaining and analysing medical evidence in investigations of sudden or accidental deaths, and homicides. Calgary Laboratory Services plays a vital role in laboratory medicine through a staff of 50 pathologists. These professionals provide consulting services to both community and hospital settings. Many of the pathologists are associated with the University of Calgary and contribute actively to the academic community by publishing articles in peer-reviewed journals and by presenting lectures at local, national, and international scientific sessions. | ||||||||||||||||
