Terms of Reference

This competition is directed at investigators who demonstrate a commitment to improving the delivery of pathology and laboratory medicine services in the Calgary Region. In particular, this competition will support research that has direct implications for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory services and the delivery of patient care and outcomes.

The principal aim of this competition is to provide funding for new research including pilot projects and projects that involve innovative, advanced diagnostics.

The competition is open to individuals or groups of investigators affiliated with Calgary Laboratory Services, the CHR or the University of Calgary through professional employment, medical staff or faculty appointment. At least one of the project investigators must have an appointment with CLS.

The total amount of funding available for this competition is $100,000 with a maximum of $30,000/ project. Up to two awards of $30,000 may be awarded. The remaining funding will be allocated for small projects requesting $10,000 or less, which may be awarded at the LOI stage without a full proposal.

The project must be completed within 2.5 years with annual progress reports and a final report submitted as requested. Investigators who do not submit reports will be ineligible for future grants and will not have project extensions approved. Investigators who have successfully completed their project and have submitted a final report are eligible for up to $1000 for publication costs.

Awards will be based on the relevance of the research to laboratory medicine and patient care in the Calgary Region and on scientific merit. Please note that ongoing projects or projects requiring multiple funding sources (especially Summer Studentships) are not the focus of this competition and will not be considered. Projects that do not pass administrative requirements will not be accepted for panel review.
