Cytopathology

Specimens in Containers

All specimens for cytologic examination (e.g. LBC cervical/vaginal samples, washes, fluids, FNA’s in Cytolyt) must be labelled according to CLS requirements.

  • Must have the patient’s first and last name and health care number or MRN in ink on the container label.
  • Must have the specimen site and collection method on the container label. 
  • Colposcopy containers must be labelled with the exact specimen site (e.g. 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock).

Direct Smears

If it is necessary to use a glass slides for a non-gynecological cytological examination, the slides:

  • Must be labeled in pencil with the patient’s first and last name on the frosted end of the slide.
  • Must be placed, when dry, into a plastic or cardboard container with the completed Cytopathology requisition wrapped around it.
