Notes

Diagnostic Transplant Biopsies

Early graft dysfunction - suspected acute rejection:

Tissue will be sampled for light microscopy (plastic and paraffin embedding) and a sample is frozen for immunofluorescence microscopy.

Late graft dysfunction, usually more than 6 months post transplant:

Tissue is sampled for examination by light microscopy (plastic and paraffin embedding), immunofluorescence and electron microscopy.

Protocol Biopsies

Baseline biopsies

Tissue is sampled for paraffin embedding and electron microscopy. This protocol does not require booking with the laboratory. Label the specimen according to CLS requirements. Submit two tissue samples:

  • One tissue sample in formalin
  • One tissue sample no larger than 3mm3, in gluteraldehyde for electron microscopy

Send them to the  Histology lab IMMEDIATELY during normal hours. After normal hours, contact the pathologist on-call for renal pathology through the Foothills Hospital.

Later Protocol biopsies

Tissue is sampled for light microscopy (plastic and paraffin embedding) only.
