Autopsy on Bodies with Infectious Diseases

Bodies with known or suspected infectious disease must be double shrouded and double red tagged when being sent for autopsy.  See the previous webpage for instructions on proper identification of the body.

The attending staff physician must consult with the pathologist prior to autopsy to address specific questions and warrant the performance of an autopsy. The pathologist will limit the extent of the autopsy in these cases.

The following is a list of infectious diseases according to Alberta Regulation 14/2001 Public Health Act.

Schedule 1

Anthrax
Plague
Viral hemorrhagic fevers

Schedule 2

Accute poliomyelitis
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)
Hepatitis B, C.
Human Immuno Deviciency virus infections (HIV)
Invasive Group A Streptococcal infection
Invasive Meningococcal infections
Invasive Pneumococcal infections
Meningitis, bacterial
Rabies
Transmissible Spongiform encephalopathies (i.e. CJD)
Tuberculosis
Typhoid
Yellow Fever

Other patholgens not currently on the list, such as SARS or MRSA, may be categorized into the most appropriate schedule at the discretion of the pathologist.
