CLS Cytopathology

Specimen Handling and Transport

Submit fresh specimen in a sterile laboratory specimen container or vacutainer. Label the container according to CLS requirements. Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage. Transport the specimen to the laboratory ASAP. If a delay is anticipated, the specimen should be refrigerated. If tests other than Cytopathology are required on the specimen as well, a requisition for each department must be completed and accompany the specimen. If Microbiology testing is required, the specimen must be sent there first.

Notes

DO NOT send drainage apparatus, needles or syringes to the laboratory.
