Specimen Handling and Transport

Auger Suction (endobronchial traps)

Submit a fresh specimen to the Cytopathology laboratory in a sterile laboratory specimen container. Label the containers according to CLS requirements. Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage.

Transport the specimen to the Cytopathology lab immediately. If a delay is anticipated, the specimen should be refrigerated. If Microbiology testing is not requested, Cytolyt may be added to specimens obtained outside regular operation hours (Monday to Friday, 0700 to 1700 hours). If Microbiology testing is also required, do not add Cytolyt. The specimen must be sent to Microbiology first with a completed Microbiology requisition.

If a cell count is required a request must be made on the Cytopathology requisition.
