Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF)

CLS Cytopathology

Specimen Handling and Transport

Submit the fresh specimen in a sterile laboratory specimen container. Label the container according to CLS requirements. Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage. Transport the specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible. If a delay is anticipated, the specimen must be refrigerated and/or have Cytolyt solution added.

If the preliminary diagnosis is leukemia or lymphoma, a second sample is required for Flow Cytometry. The second specimen must have at least an equal volume of RPMI solution added to the tube to preserve the sample. Do NOT add Cytolyt. Send this specimen together with the Cytopathology specimen to the Cytopathology laboratory.
