Specimen Handling and Requirement

Submit the specimen in a sterile laboratory specimen container (no preservative). A series of three early morning deep cough specimens is the most sensitive. Patients should clean teeth and mouth prior to obtaining specimen. If non-productive specimens are obtained, induced specimens may be required. Arrangements should be made through the ordering physician. Label the containers according to CLS requirements. Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage.

Transport each specimen to the laboratory as soon as possible. The specimen should be refrigerated if a delay in transporting the specimen is anticipated.
