Specimen Handling and Transport

Submit a fresh specimen to the laboratory ASAP in a sterile laboratory container. Label the containers according to CLS requirements.

First morning specimens should NOT be used. The patient should drink 3 eight ounce glasses of water approximately 1 hour before collection in order to obtain a well hydrated specimen.

If a delay in transporting the specimen to the laboratory is anticipated, refrigerate and/or add an equal amount of Cytolyt to the specimen. Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage.
