Specimen Requirements

Adults: 1 x 5 mL blue top sodium citrate tube (4.5 mL draw)

Pediatric: 1 x short-draw blue top sodium citrate tube (2.7 mL draw)

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

 
Specimen Handling

PSC and RRL: DO NOT centrifuge; send directly to DSC Special Coagulation; it must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

Extra-regional: centrifuge at 3500 rpm for 20 minutes, separate plasma into 2-3 aliquots in plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation.

 
Additional Information

A copy of original requisition MUST accompany specimens, along with a completed Factor Xa History form.

Recommended collection time is 3 - 5 hours post dose.

For test processing on weekends/off hours clinician MUST contact the Hematopathologist on call to obtain approval. Samples can be collected, but test will not be processed unless approved.
