Specimen Requirements

1 x 5 mL dark green top heparin tube or light green (mint) top PST tube  
Whole blood.
Pediatric: 600 uL whole blood in a microtainer tube or 2 mL whole blood in a green top microtainer tube.

Fill tube completely. DO NOT centrifuge or open tube.

Specimen Handling

Specimen must be transported on ice.  DO NOT freeze.
DO NOT centrifuge. DO NOT open tube.

Specimen MUST be tested within 8 hours of collection.

PSC: Copy of requisition must accompany collected specimen. TRANSPORT to FMC 6th floor laboratory who will redirect to Respiratory.
PHONE FMC 6th Floor Accession 944-4066 to inform a sample is enroute; RECORD name who received your call and time. FMC 6th floor staff will call Respiratory Tech at pager #0105 when specimen arrives.

 

Additional Information

CLS Accession: if a specimen arrives from a non-CLS site, always enter into PathNet before delivering to Respiratory.
