Fetal Lung Maturity Test (FLM)

Specimen Requirements

8-10 mL amniotic fluid free of maternal urine, marked blood contamination and/or meconium

4 mL minimum volume

Protect from light by using brown bottle for collection, or by wrapping entire container in foil.

 
Specimen Handling Freeze samples prior to transport to the DSC.

Include gestational age, diabetic status, phone number/pager to report results.
State if sample has been contaminated with meconium or blood. 
Additional Information

FLM testing on amniotic fluid involves a cascade of tests starting with fluorescence polarization (FP), then phosphatidylglycerol (PG).
