Source Blood from newborn and/or mother.

Specimen Requirements

Mother: 1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Newborn: Cord blood

 
Specimen Handling

Cord specimen labelling requirements are:

  • Mother's last and first name.
  • Mother's MRN/RHRN
  • Mother's ABO/Rh
  • Baby's last name and gender/first name
  • Baby's MRN/RHRN
  • Must be labelled "Cord Blood"
 
Additional Information

A Direct Antiglobulin Test is ordered on all cord specimens. Direct Antiglobulin testing only performed on cord blood specimens when the mother is Rh negative or by physician request. Additional testing is performed on the basis of the DAT results and maternal Rh type.

Cord specimens are retained in the Tranfusion Medicine department for 7 days.
