Specimen Requirements and Specimen Handling Instructions

Many of the tests referred external to CLS require large volumes of serum. The volumes shown for each test MUST be adhered to, to not jeopardize testing.  Pediatric volumes may be supplied, but this reduced volume is not ideal for routine testing.

Approximate Serum Yields

1 x 10 mL Red Top tube

 = 2.5 – 3.0 mL serum

1 x 10 mL SST tube

 = 2.0 – 2.5 mL serum

1 x 5 mL SST tube

 = 1.5 mL serum

Information has been provided to ensure the specimen is properly collected, prepared, and preserved during and after collection for transport. The integrity and quality of the result is dependent on these instructions being adhered to. Failure to do so may result in recollection. Additional information regarding pre approval and fees may also be included. Inquiries concerning test collection may be directed to Calgary Laboratory Services.

Routine testing frequency is provided to assist in assessing return of results.

Fees

Employment related testing, tests required as part of an Occupational Health Program, or tests for participation in any clinical trial or study are not covered by the Alberta Provincial Insurance Plan.  Fees for the testing and transport of these specimens must be paid for by the patient or other third party.
