Specimen Requirements

Random stool collection in sterile container (no preservative).

Minimum 1 gram

 
Specimen Handling

Specimen stable 2-8ºC (refrigerator) for 48 hours; freeze for additional stability. Do not freeze and thaw more than two times.

PSC & RRL: Place on ice and transport on ice to DSC.
Extra-regional: Freeze stool prior to transport to DSC.
DSC: Freeze specimen for transport to referral lab.

 
Additional Information

Test used for children under 6 years of age.  For patients age 6 and older, see Urea Breath Test for Helicobacter pylori.

Discontinue treatment with antimicrobials, proton pump inhibitors or bismuth for two weeks prior to testing.

Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.
