Adult: 4 x 5 mL blue top sodium citrate tube (4.5 mL draw)
Pediatric: 2 x short-draw (2.7 mL draw) blue top sodium citrate tube (minimum 1 short-draw tube, 2.7 mL)
Whole blood
When using a winged blood collection set (butterly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn. |
| Specimen Handling |
PSC and RRL: Send specimens, UNSPUN at room temperature to DSC Special Coagulation within 2 hours of collection.
Include copy of original requisition and Hemostasis Studies history form. If patient has received Desmopressin or Factor Concentrate, indicate medication, amount received, time of infusion/injection, IV or subcutaneous, patient weight.
DO NOT transport samples through pneumatic tube system.
Extra-regional: Centrifuge blue top tubes at 3500 rpm for 20 minutes, aliquot plasma into 5-6 plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation. |

Note: Bleeding time and platelet aggregation studies must be booked with Special Coagulation. Closure time is collected Monday to Friday 0700h - 1300h. No collection on statutory holidays.
If a Stat PT/PTT is required at ACH, draw one additional 1.8 mL draw plastic tube and indicate "STAT PT/PTT" on the requisition. If unable to draw additional tube, submit all short-draw 2.7 mL tubes to Special Coagulation; indicate "STAT PT/PTT" on requisition. In this case the tests will be performed off-site and the turnaround time for results may be extended. |
