Specimen Requirements

Adult: 2 x 5 mL blue top sodium citrate tubes (4.5 mL draw)

Pediatric: 1 x short-draw (2.7 mL draw) blue top sodium citrate tube.

Whole blood

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

 
Specimen Handling

PSC and RRL: Send specimens UNSPUN at room temperature directly to DSC Special Coagulation. Must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

Extra-regional: Centrifuge at 3500 rpm for 20 minutes, aliquot plasma into 4 plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation.

Specimens MUST be accompanied with a copy of the original requisition and a Lupus type inhibitor history form.
