Blood for mumps serology

Urine and/or saliva for mumps nucleic acid testing (NAT)

Specimen Requirements

Blood: 1 x 5 mL gold top SST tube
           Pediatric: 2 mL in red top tube

Urine: 10 mL in sterile container

Saliva: swab of saliva in Universal Transport medium, collected from buccal cavity adjacent to infected salivary gland.

For CLS staff use only: blood or urine may be collected at any PSC site. If saliva collection is required, refer the patient to Sunridge, Market Mall, Beddington, Glenbrook or South Calgary Health Centre PSC ONLY. These sites have the saliva self-collection kits required. PSC staff should triage suspected mumps patients immediately to a phlebotomy room and provide patient with orange particulate matter mask.

PSC: refer to PSC.210 SOP for collection/processing details. Provided that patient is masked, it is not necessary for staff to mask during blood collection.

Specimen Handling Transport at room temperature within 8 hours of collection.  If more than 8 hours, send on an ice-pack .
Additional Information

For physician use only: For Mumps Serology (blood), order "Mumps IgM & IgG serology" on the requisition for acute and convalescent serum samples.  Indicate on requisition whether testing is for Immunity or Acute Infection.  For NAT (urine and saliva), order "Urine Mumps NAT" and/or "Saliva Mumps NAT" on the requisition.

Physicians should refer patients to have their collections completed at Sunridge, Market Mall, Beddington, Glenbrook or South Calgary Health Centre PSCs only. Instruct patient to proceed directly to reception desk and not to take a seat in the Patient Service Centre waiting room.
