Mnemonic For blood specimens: PLBL
For non-blood specimens that do not need to be split: PLNON
For non-blood specimen that need to be split: AFBREF 
Specimen Requirements

Adults: 1 x 10 mL pale yellow top SPS tube (available from CLS Referrals Department).  At least 5 mL blood required.

Pediatric: 1 x 3 mL pale yellow top SPS tube (available from CLS Referrals Department).

Alternately, if required blood volume cannot be obtained, BACTEC Myco/F Lytic vials may be inoculated at the patient's bedside.  To obtain BACTEC Myco/F Lytic vials, contact the Provincial Laboratory Mycobacteriology Department at 944-1200.
