Specimen Requirements

Using needle and syringe, aspirate material from closed abscess and inject specimen through the stopper into an anaerobic transport media (PRAS).
Alternately, transfer specimen to a sterile container.

Submit swabs in anaerobic transport media (PRAS).

Specimen Handling

Store specimen at room temperature.
Do NOT refrigerate.

DO NOT submit specimen in syringe, with or without needle attached.

 
Additional Information

A deep abscess is a specimen associated with a "closed" space.
Aspirated material (pus) or deep wound swab are specimens of choice.

Indicate Candida/Yeast on requisition if required.

Turnaround time for negative culture: 4 days.
