Specimen Requirements

Acceptable specimen; duodenal/illeostomy aspirate.
Submit 1 - 5 mL of specimen in anaerobic transport media or sterile container.
Acceptable minimum volume: 1 mL.

If the specimen is diluted in saline, quantitative cultures CANNOT be done.

Specimen Handling Transport specimen ASAP (priority).
Store specimen at room temperature.
DO NOT refrigerate. 
Additional Information Quantitation of aerobic and anaerobic flora performed.

DO NOT submit specimen in syringe, with or without needle attached.

Swabs of fluids not acceptable.

Indicate Candida/Yeast on requisition if required.
Turnaround time for negative culture: 4 days.
