Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Prosthetic Device specimen: graft, implant, lens, etc.

Acceptable Implanted Medical Device specimen: pacemaker leads (pacer tip) or any part of pacemaker, cement from joint revisions, screws or pins from bone reconstruction, pieces of joint reconstruction material (titanium, surgical steel, or plastic). pieces of skull plate.

Submit specimen in sterile container.

Specimen Handling DO NOT refrigerate.
Store specimen at room temperature.
Transport ASAP (priority). Specimen MUST be received in the laboratory within 2 hours of receipt in RRL.
Additional Information

Consult Microbiologist on Call at 770-3757 to confirm other acceptable sources.

If clinically indicated, specimen source also suitable for
anaerobic culture.

Turnaround time for negative culture: 2 days.
