Specimen Requirements

Patient should refrain from voiding for 4-6 hours, or overnight, prior to test.
No ejaculation in 5-7 days preceding test.
No antibiotics 2-4 weeks preceding test.

Collect either:

  • Midstream urine (VB2),
  • Expressed post-massage prostatic fluid (EPS), AND
  • Urine (VB3).

or

  • Midstream urine (VB2), AND
  • Ejaculate (semen).

Avoid ejaculation for 5-7 days prior to sample collection:

  • Void 200 mL, then collect next 10 mL urine into sterile container. Label as VB2.
  • When bladder near empty, massage prostrate and collect expressed prostrate fluid. Label as EPS.
  • Collect next 10 mL urine. Label as VB3

or

  • Collect urine (VB2), sample as above.
  • Submit ejaculate (semen) in a sterile container.

Clearly indicate that this is a prostatic culture specimen.

 
Specimen Handling

DO NOT refrigerate.

Transport speciman ASAP (priority).
Specimen MUST be received in the laboratory within 2 hours of collection.
