ADULT (>14 y): green FAN Aerobic and orange FAN Anaerobic bottles
Collect 10 mL per bottle. Collect 2 SETS green/orange (4 bottles) from 2 separate sites, i.e. right arm and left arm. or collect one set from patient line and one set by venipuncture. Always collect the green bottle first. DO NOT use yellow (pediatric) bottles for adults.
PEDIATRIC (>3 mo, <14 y): yellow Pedi-BacT FAN and orange Anaerobic FAN bottles. Always collect the yellow bottle first.
Small Children:1 yellow bottle (3 mL blood - minimum 1.5 mL) & 1 orange bottle (3 mL blood - minimum 1.5 mL). Larger Children:1 yellow bottle (4 mL blood - minimum 3 mL) & 1 orange bottle (10 mL blood - minimum 3 mL). Neonate (<3 mo): 1 yellow bottle (1.5 mL blood).
COLLECTION Equipment: - Check the bottom of the bottle – if it is yellow, do NOT use. - Draw a line on bottle indicating appropriate fill level (DO NOT overfill or underfill). - Disinfect bottle tops with 70% isopropanol and allow to dry for 1 minute. DO NOT use iodine. - Use “butterfly” collection units. Syringe collection is not desirable. DO NOT use straight needle and Vacutainer. Cleansing the Site: - After selecting blood collection site, scrub the site with 70% isopropanol for a minimum of 30 seconds. Allow to dry. Using 10% PVP Iodine, cleanse the site for 30 seconds using a circular motion, starting at the center of the site and moving outward. Allow to dry minimum 1 minute, preferably 2 minutes. - If patient is allergic to 70% alcohol, use double application of PVP Iodine; if patient is allergic to iodine, use double application of 70% isopropanol. Allow to dry. - Disinfect gloved finger if re-palpation of venipuncture site is required. Collection Notes: - If other blood work is to be collected, collect the blood cultures first. - If unable to collect optimal amount, place as much blood as possible (up to maximum allowed for age group) into the green (adults) or yellow (children) bottle first, then place remaining blood into orange bottle. - Remove residual iodine from skin with 70% isopropanol after venipuncture. - After collection, gently mix bottles by inversion to prevent clotting. |
