Specimen Requirements

24 hour urine:
REFRIGERATE during collection.
Specimen may be acidified during or following collection, see Specimen Handling section for acidification instructions.

Random:
Follow acidification instructions in Specimen Handling.

Submit 5 mL aliquot of acidified 24 hour or random urine collection.

Specimen Handling

Acidify specimen in original collection container.
RECORD 24 hour volume and collection (start and end) dates and time in space provided on requisition.

24 Hour Collection:
< 5 years:         Collect in 5 mL of 6 mol/L HCl
5-10 years:       Collect in 10 mL of 6 mol/L HCl
10-15 years:     Collect in 15 mL of 6 mol/L HCl
15 years-Adult: Collect in 25 mL of 6 mol/L HCl

Random Collection:
Acidify with 6 mol/L HCl immediately after collection.
Shake bottle vigorously and LET SIT 15 minutes.
Mix and pour off 5 mL to aliquot tube.
