Specimen Requirements

1 x 5 mL dark green top sodium heparin tube (not PST) AND 1 x 5 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Mix well immediately after collection. Protect heparin tube from light by wrapping entire tube in foil.

DO NOT collect on Fridays.

 
Specimen Handling

Heparin tube: Freeze (if glass sodium heparin tube is collected, pour blood into a plastic tube prior to freezing, and indicate on plastic tube that blood was collected in sodium heparin).
EDTA tube: Deliver to CLS Hematology for hemoglobin determination

Referrals: Record hemoglobin result on U of A requisition.

 
Additional Information

Measures total protoporphyrins (Zinc & Free). No special arrangements required.
