Specimen Requirements

If both Aldosterone and Renin are ordered, they must be collected together at the same site.

Collections performed at acute care (RRL) sites, and all PSCs EXCEPT Airdrie, Cochrane, and Southcentre.

Specimens are to be collected before 1000 due to fluctuations in Renin levels throughout the day.

1 x 5 mL lavender top EDTA tubes

2 x 1.5 mL plasma

Minimum Blood Volumes for Patients less than 45 kg (100 lb) Including Neonates and Pediatrics

Store tubes for renin collection at 4ºC (refrigerator)
Collect blood in chilled (4ºC) tube. DO NOT use tourniquet.

 
Specimen Handling

Mix and chill immediately after collection. 
Centrifuge at 4ºC + 2ºC ASAP.
Remove plasma to 2 chilled plastic tubes. 

RRL and extra-regional: Process and transport frozen to DSC.
PSC: Process and transport frozen or attached to ice pack to DSC.

Do not allow specimen to thaw.

Record time of collection on requisition and tube. Note whether patient was sitting or lying down during collection.

If Lasix given, state amount.
