Sickle Cell Screen

Mnemonic

SICKLES

Hemoglobin S Quantitation/Level, or Children 6 months of age or less: Order HBELEC (HBELECR at RRL sites) instead of SICKLES.

 
Specimen Requirements

Adult:1 x 5 mL lavender top EDTA tube
Pediatric: 1 x 3 mL lavender top EDTA tube or 2 lavender top EDTA microtainer tubes. (Second EDTA microtainer is used to perform a CBC.)

Whole blood

FMC/PLC/RGH: Collect 2nd lavender tube to perform CBCR.
Extra-regional: Send CBC results with specimen.

 

 
Specimen Handling

DO NOT centrifuge.

ACH collections: If only SICKLES requested, send specimen to FMC. FMC Hematology will perform CBC on specimen.
