Specimen Requirements

2 x 5 mL gold top SST tubes preferred; 2 x 5 mL light green (mint) top PST tubes are also acceptable. 

2.0 mL serum (or plasma)

Minimum Blood Volume for Patients less than 45 kg (100 lb) Including Neonates and Pediatrics

 
Specimen Handling DO NOT store serum (or plasma) on gel tube.  Remove to properly labelled aliquot tube for transport and storage. 
Additional Information

This test is indicated for measuring thiocyanate toxicity in patients on long-term nitroprusside therapy and with hepatic or renal dysfunction. It is not intended for monitoring occupational health surveillance due to cyanide exposure.

Reference Interval Thiocyanate levels up to 0.5 mmol/L are seen with nitroprusside therapy.
Thiocyanate levels greater than 1.4 mmol/L are reportedly toxic.
