Blood Component Administration
The administration of blood products is guided by the related procedures in the Regional Nursing Policy and Procedure Manual. This includes information on administration sets, needle size and infusion rates. Policy B-3 Blood Component/ Product Administration includes information about the following:

Intravenous Immune Globulin (IVIG) Administration Information
The following guidelines are for the infusion of IVIG preparations. These guidelines have been prepared from the information provided by the manufacturer in the product insert.
- Most IVIG preparations are in a 10% concentration.
- The compatible solution for IVIG preparations (except Sandoglobulin) is D5W
(5% dextrose in water)
- Sandoglobulin 12% must not be mixed with other medical products in the
same infusion line.

- If infusion at the initial rate is well tolerated, gradually increase the rate of infusion.
- If side effects occur, the rate may be reduced.
- The infusion may be interrupted until symptoms subside and the infusion restarted
at the rate that is comfortable for the patient.
Calculating the rate per hour: Infusion rate (mL) x body weight (kg) x 60 minutes (hr)
Examples for a 70 kg patient:
Gammunex: 0.01 mL x 70 kg x 60 minutes = 42 mL/hour
Gammagard: 0.5 mL x 70 kg x 1 hour = 35 mL/ hour
