Fine Needle Aspirations (FNA) - CT/Ultrasound guided for deep-seated lesions

Requisition

CLS Non-Gynecological Cytopathology Requisition (REQ9041CY-NON)

Specimen Handling and Requirements

This procedure may yield a Cytopathology specimen, a tissue specimen or both. The Cytopathology specimen should be expelled into a Cytolyt container and the tissue core specimen must be placed in a small formalin container.

If a core biopsy has been obtained in addition to the Cytology specimen, both samples must be sent to the Cytopathology laboratory together.

If Lymphoma is suspected, an additional specimen collected in TTM (Tissue Transport Media) is recommended on all FNAs for Flow Cytometric analysis. To order collection tubes of TTM, refer to Ordering Bone Marrow and Tissue Transport Media - Calgary Zone Only.

Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leakage.

Label the containers according to CLS requirements.

Send specimens together to the Cytopathology laboratory.

Procedures yielding a tissue specimen only should be sent in formalin to the on-site Anatomical Pathology laboratory with AHS Anatomical Pathology Requisition (Consultation Request) 19027. A Non-Gynecological Cytopathology Requisition is not required.
