Exempt Tissues

All tissues removed at operation, with the exception of those listed below are to be forwarded to the Histopathology Laboratory at all Hospitals.  These tissues are exempt under the Alberta Hospital Act (Section 247/90):

• Amputation stumps - secondary
• Blood clots
• Bony fragments and ligaments
• Bony ossicles (ears)
• Cartilage, external ear (plastic)
• Fingers
• Foreign bodies ( including bone plates, nails, screws)
• Hernia sac
• Hydrocele sac
• Intervertebral discs
• Menigocele sac
• Nasal septa when removed for obstruction only
• Optic lens
• Prepuces
• Ribs removed incidental to chest surgery
• Scar tissue
• Semilunar cartilage
• Teeth
• Tendon segments removed incidental to orthopedic procedures
• Toes
• Toe and fingernails
• Tonsils and adenoids (patient under 40)
• Vaginal wall fragments ( plastic repair)
• Varicocele
• Vein strippings
