Specimen Handling and Transport

Label all specimen containers according to CLS requirements. Containers must be securely tightened to eliminate any leaks.

Submit all routine small organ and biopsy specimens in 10% Formalin (NBF) in an appropriate sized plastic container. There should be a minimum of 10 times the volume of the specimen.

Devitalization of all specimens must be documented on the requisition.

During normal service hours:

  • Contact the Anatomic Pathology Laboratory with any questions or concerns.
  • Submit large organ/resections fresh, in an appropriate plastic container or double plastic bags.
  • Submit fresh specimens to the lab as soon as possible, ideally within 30 minutes of devitalization.
  • Organs to be submitted fresh include:

    • Adrenal glands
    • Bladder resections
    • Breast
    • Colon, small bowel segmental resections (after hours, please open specimen to ensure appropriate fixation of the mucosa)
    • Kidneys
    • Liver resections
    • Lungs
    • Ovaries (large)
    • Prostatectomies
    • Soft tissue resections (large)  
    • Stomach resections
    • Thyroid/head and neck tumours
    • Uterus / hysterectomy specimens (after hours, please open specimen to ensure appropriate fixation)

After normal service hours:

  • Contact the pathologist on-call by phoning the hospital switchboard.
  • Submit all large/organ resections in 10% Formalin (NBF).
