Specimen Requirements

See CSF Collection Guidelines. Use second collection vial with no visible blood contamination.

Minimum 0.25 mL CSF

This test must be ordered in conjunction with Amino Acids - Blood, with both samples collected simultaneously.

Specimen Handling

Send a copy of the requisition with the specimen.

PSC:
Indicate specimen type on label, and send specimen on ice in plastic vial to DSC.

RRL:
Indicate specimen type on label, and send specimen on ice in plastic vial to ACH. If collected after regular business hours (i.e. M-F 08:00-16:15), freeze specimen and transport frozen to ACH the next business day.

Extra-regional:
Indicate specimen type on label, and freeze in plastic vial before sending to DSC.

DSC:
Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.

This test is for the investigation of disorders of amino acid metabolism with specific neurologic presentations.
