Specimen Requirements

1 x 4 mL red top tube, NOT SST

Serum separator (gel) vacutainers must be avoided as the drugs may adhere to the gel.

Minimum 2 mL serum

Collect within one hour before next dose or more than 12 hours after last dose.

Specimen Handling

PSC & RRL:
Centrifuge, pour off, and transport serum to DSC. Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.

Extra-regional:
Centrifuge, pour off, and freeze serum prior to transport to DSC. Send specimen in a separate bag with a photocopy of the requisition.

DSC:
Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.

Specimens delivered to DSC Toxicology will be taken to Referrals for send out to University of Alberta.
