Specimen Requirements

Cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).
Adults:
1 x 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate tube

Pediatric:
1 x 2.7 mL short-draw blue top sodium citrate tube

Neonate:
1 x 1.8 mL short-draw blue top sodium citrate tube

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

Specimen Handling

PSC and RRL:
DO NOT
centrifuge; send directly to DSC Special Coagulation; it must arrive within 2 hours of collection.

Extra-regional:
Centrifuge at 3500 rpm for 20 minutes, separate plasma into 2-3 aliquots in plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation.

Additional Information

A copy of original requisition MUST accompany specimens, along with a completed Factor Xa History form.Recommended collection time is 3 - 5 hours post dose.

For test processing on weekends/off hours clinician MUST contact the Hematopathologist on call to obtain approval. Samples can be collected, but test will not be processed unless approved.

Exception: ECMO patients. Hematopathologist approval is not required. Call DSC Accession (403-770-3245/cell 587-226-6391
