Specimen Requirements

Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).

Adults: 1 x 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate tube
Pediatric: 1 x 2.7 mL blue top sodium citrate tube
Neonate: 1 x 1.8 mL blue top sodium citrate tube

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle), a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

Specimen Handling

PSC:
Send specimens UNSPUN at room temperature directly to DSC Special Coagulation. Specimens must arrive within 3.5 hours of collection.

RRL:
Send specimens UNSPUN at room temperature directly to DSC Special Coagulation. Specimens must arrive within 1 hour of collection.

DO NOT transport samples through pneumatic tube system.

Extra-regional:
Centrifuge at 2800 RCF for 20 minutes, separate plasma into 2-3 aliquots in plastic tubes. Freeze and transport frozen to DSC Special Coagulation.

Specimens MUST be accompanied by a copy of the original requisition and completed Factor Xa History Form SC4904. Send the original requisition for optical scanning. Note: For lab-collected SCM orders on inpatients, only history form is required, not requisition.

Additional Information

Recommended collection time is 3 - 5 hours post dose.

For stat testing on weekends and off hours:
Hematologists: No approval is necessary if sample is collected before 15:00 on weekends. On weekdays, please notify the special coagulation laboratory before 16:00 if a sample is being drawn after 15:00. Outside of these times, approval is required by Hematopathologist.
Other physicians: MUST contact the Hematopathologist on call to obtain approval. Samples can be collected, but test will not be processed unless approved.

For ECMO patients, Hematopathologist approval is not required. Contact the laboratory as follows:
- FMC ECMO  Weekdays: Contact Special Coagulation 403-770-3598 (if no answer, leave a message)
- FMC ECMO  Weekends: Contact FMC Hematology 403-944-8165.
- ACH ECMO  Weekdays 07:00 to 16:00: Contact Special Coagulation 403-770-3598
- ACH ECMO  Evenings 16:00 to 07:00 and weekends: Contact DSC Accession 403-770-3245, who will notify DSC Hematology. If no Hematology technologist is on site, DSC Accession will call Special Coagulation staff at home.
