Specimen Requirements

Blood (preferred specimen type):
2 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tubes.

PSC:
Collect Monday to Thursday before 11:00 (holidays excluded). For patients arriving for collection outside of these hours, please call Molecular Hematology at 403-770-3699, option 2, before collection.

ACH, PLC, RGH, SHC and SSB:
Collect Monday to Thursday before 13:30 (holidays excluded). For patients arriving for collection outside of these hours, please call Molecular Hematology at 403-770-3699, option 2, before collection.

Rural:
Please call Molecular Hematology at 403-770-3699, option 2, before collection.

Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).

Bone Marrow: 
1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Specimen Handling

All sites, other than rural:
DO NOT
centrifuge. Place samples immediately in 4ºC fridge until next courier run. Package samples on ice pack, ensuring tube is not in direct contact with ice pack, so specimen does not freeze. Place requisition and specimen in separate bag and transport to DSC for Molecular Hematology.

Rural sites: 
DO NOT centrifuge. Place on ice immediately after collection. If delay in transport, store at 4ºC. Specimens must be received by Molecular Hematology no later than 15:00 the day following collection, receipt Monday to Friday only, statutory holidays excluded.

DSC Accession:
After 16:30, store at 4ºC.

Additional Information

Molecular investigations must be DEDICATED specimens to avoid sample contamination.

Peripheral blood specimens must be accompanied by a completed CLS Molecular Hematology requisition (REQ9053MH).

Bone marrow specimens must be accompanied by a completed Bone Marrow Pathology requisition (REQ9061BM).

Reports are released within 3 weeks of sample receipt for IS-MMR calibrated BCR-ABL1 requests and within 4 weeks of sample receipt for minor breakpoint BCR-ABL1 requests.
