Specimen Requirements

Note: Collected by Respiratory/Anaesthesia/Nursing Services/Physician

Adult:
1 mL of blood in an Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Syringe

Pediatric:
0.3 to 0.7 mL of blood in 1 mL Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Syringe

Specimen Handling Mix well. Avoid or remove air bubbles. Do NOT place on ice or in ice slurry. Must be analyzed within 15 minutes of collection.
Additional Information

BGA and CHEMWBA include: pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3), Base Excess (BE), Total Hemoglobin, O2 Saturation (Oxyhemoglobin), Carboxyhemoglobin, Methemoglobin, Hematocrit, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Ionized Calcium, Glucose, and Lactate.

RBGA  includes  pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3), Base Excess and O2 Saturation.

ABGS includes pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3), Base Excess (BE), Total Hemoglobin, O2 Saturation (Oxyhemoglobin), Carboxyhemoglobin, Methemoglobin and Hematocrit.

ACH:
Page respiratory at 05820 for ED or 05253 for inpatients prior to collection to confirm availability to assay specimen within 15 minutes.

SHC OR only:
Order in SCM or on CLS Acute Care requisition.
Call the Chemistry direct line 6-1377 and inform them that a blood gas sample is being sent via the pneumatic tube system. DO NOT place blood gas sample in the same biohazard bag as any other blood work; use a separate biohazard bag.

FMC McCaig OR only:
Order in SCM or on CLS Acute Care requisition.
Page 'ABG sent' to 00304 to inform them that a blood gas sample is being sent via the pneumatic tube system. DO NOT place blood gas sample in the same biohazard bag as any other blood work; use a separate biohazard bag.

NOTE: Patient must meet the qualifications to have an arterial blood gas performed. These tests are run as a panel ONLY. This test panel is not routine electrolyte, metabolite or hemoglobin testing.
