CMGH: BGRV
DDHS, SDHS: BGV
Specimen Requirements

NOTE: Not collected by CLS.
             Collected by Nursing Services.

CRL: Collected by nursing or lab staff.

Test is not available to outpatient or community patients.

Adult:
1 mL of blood in an Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Syringe

Pediatric:
0.3 to 0.7 mL of blood in 1 mL Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Syringe

CRL: 1 x 4.0 mL dark green top lithium heparin tube

Specimen Handling Mix well. Avoid or remove air bubbles. Do NOT place on ice or in ice slurry. Must be analyzed within 15 minutes of collection.
Additional Information

Order on a respiratory requisition and present to the respiratory department at an acute care site.

CRL: Order on CRL requisition.

ACH:
Page respiratory at 05820 for ED or 05253 for inpatients prior to collection to confirm availability to assay specimen within 15 minutes.

SHC:
ED, PACU, ICU, OR only:
Order in SCM or on CLS Acute Care requisition.
Call the Chemistry direct line 6-1377 and inform them that a blood gas sample is being sent via the pneumatic tube system.
DO NOT place blood gas sample in the same biohazard bag as any other blood work; use a separate biohazard bag.

FMC:
ED, McCaig PACU, McCaig OR only:

Order in SCM or on CLS Acute Care requisition.
Page 'VBG sent' to 00304 to inform them that a blood gas sample is being sent via the pneumatic tube system. DO NOT place blood gas sample in the same biohazard bag as any other blood work; use a separate biohazard bag.

If collected in an Electrolyte Balanced Heparin Blood Gas Syringe, Blood Gas includes: pH, pCO2, pO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3), Base Excess (BE), Total Hemoglobin, Oxyhemoglobin (O2 Saturation), Carboxyhemoglobin, Methemoglobin, Hematocrit, Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, Ionized Calcium, Glucose and Lactate.

If collected in a lithium heparin tube, Blood Gas includes pH, pCO2, Bicarbonate (HCO3) and Base Excess; vacutainer collection does not allow for accurate measurement of pOand O2 Saturation.

NOTE: Patient must meet the qualifications to have a blood gas performed. These tests are run as a panel ONLY. This test panel is NOT for routine electrolyte, metabolite or hemoglobin testing.
