Specimen Requirements

1 x 3.5 mL gold top SST tube

Keep tubes cold (immerse in ice water or crushed ice) prior to and immediately after collection. 

Collections performed at acute care (RRL) sites and all PSCs. (Note: Collection at PSCs must occur at least 2 hours before the PSC closes to allow adequate time for clotting and processing.)
Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).

Specimen Handling PSC & RRL:
Allow to clot on ice. Centrifuge at 4ºC + 2ºC, aliquot and freeze immediately. Transport frozen specimen to DSC on ice in a separate bag with a copy of the requisition.

Extra-regional: 
Allow to clot on ice. Centrifuge at 4ºC + 2ºC, aliquot and freeze immediately. Transport to DSC on dry ice in a separate bag with a copy of the requisition.

DSC:
Place specimens in freezer upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.

Indicate on requisition if this is a Calcium Infusion.
