2 x 6 mL mauve top CATP tube (Special Catecholamine collection tube K2 EDTA with sodium metabisulfite)

2.5 mL plasma minimum

Minimum Whole Blood Volumes for Microcollections

Note: for Adrenal Venous Sampling (AVS) ONLY, 1 x 6 mL mauve top CATP tube is acceptable; 2 tubes are not required.

Collections performed at Sloane Square, Sunridge, Beddington, and Glenbrook PSC, and acute care (RRL) sites ONLY.

PSC or RRL collection staff: Obtain CATP tubes from DSC Referrals (403-770-3285). Keep tubes cold (immerse in ice water or crushed ice) prior to and immediately after collection.  Check expiry date on collection tube before use.

For resting sample, have patient in resting position for at least 30 minutes prior to collection.
Specimen Handling Record on requisition whether patient is "ACTIVE" or "RESTING".

Centrifuge at 4ºC + 2ºC. Remove plasma to 2 separate tubes and freeze plasma prior to transport to DSC. 

DSC: ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.

Northland Mall Dialysis Clinic only (VITAH study) - samples must be sent to DSC on ice and plama removed within 1 hour of collection.
Additional Information Testing includes Epinephrine, Norepinephrine and Dopamine.

False positive increases in urine and plasma metanephrines and catecholamines have been associated with the following drugs or classes of drugs: anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, some beta blockers, dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers, some anxiolytics, anti-Parkinson’s drugs, decongestants, phenoxybenzamine.

 

Interpretation of results while on one of these agents should be interpreted with caution and put into clinical context.
