Complete Blood Count

Source Blood
Mnemonic CBC

See Specimen Requirements for the mnemonic for platelet clumpers.
Specimen Requirements

1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube
Whole blood
Minimum volume 1.0 mL

Minimum Whole Blood Volumes for Microcollections

Mix well by inverting tube 8 to 10 times.

Collection can be combined in 1 x 4 mL tube with ESR (EDTA only) and/or Reticulocyte Count.

Extra-regional:
Provide a dried unstained blood smear.

Platelet Clumpers:
If platelet clumping is suspected and the requisition indicates "Platelet Clumper" or "Clumper":
- Order "CLUMPHEPCIT" and collect a blue top sodium citrate tube and a green top sodium heparin tube along with the CBC lavender EDTA tube.
- CLUMPHEPCIT must be on the same accession number and have the same priority as the CBC, e.g. if the CBC is stat, then CLUMPHEPCIT must also be stat.
- When multiple tubes are drawn, keep all tubes together with the CBC (for .CBC and .Auto Diff) with an elastic band.
-
For inpatient collections, the Hematology clinical section or the nursing unit may inform collection staff that extra tubes must be drawn due to platelet clumping.

Specimen Handling DO NOT centrifuge.

CLS Accession staff:
If specimen type is cord blood, or suspected to be cord blood (e.g. 4 mL EDTA collected), package requisition with specimen and notify Hematology.
