Specimen Requirements Newborn - 6 months:
1 to 3 mL blood in a green top sodium heparin tube AND 1 to 3 mL blood in a lavender top EDTA

Children and Adults:
3 to 5 mL blood in a green top sodium heparin tube AND 3 to 5 mL blood in a lavender top EDTA.
 
Specimen Handling DO NOT centrifuge or separate specimen; keep/send at room temperature.  Transport both tubes of blood, with requisition to  the Cytogenetics Laboratory, Alberta Children's Hospital.

PSC:
Transport specimen at room temperature immediately to DSC.

RRL:
Transport specimen at room temperature immediately to ACH.

Blood collected outside of regular hours will be stored at room temperature in ACH Chemistry or in DSC Referrals.  Samples stored over the weekend in DSC Referrals will be forwarded to ACH Cytogenetics Lab on Monday morning.
