Specimen Requirements

Test can be collected only at:

  • Airdrie PSC
  • Cochrane Community Health Centre PSC
  • Sheldon M Chumir Health Centre PSC
  • South Calgary Health Centre PSC
  • All acute care hospitals ED, inpatient units and outpatient laboratories
  • Extra-regional hospitals

Test cannot be collected by Mobile Collection Service (MCS).

PSC:
DO NOT collect test (except for Airdrie, Cochrane, SMCHC, and SCHC PSCs).
Order and cancel test (cancellation reason LAB-Not Collected). Add order comment with coded phrase DDIMER "Patient was referred to an adult acute care outpatient laboratory for collection of D-Dimer request ".
Patient MUST be referred to specific sites for collection. Provide patient with a completed copy of the form Patient Referral Special Test Collection PX4149. Select appropriate collection site on form. Form provides location/hours of the applicable collection labs.


Adult:
1 x 2.7 mL blue top sodium citrate plastic tube is preferred. 4.5 mL blue top sodium citrate glass tube is also acceptable.

Pediatric:
1 x 2.7 or 1.8 mL short-draw blue top sodium citrate tube

Whole blood

It is important to fill tube to maximum draw. Mix well.
Indicate collection time on tube.

When using a winged blood collection set (butterfly needle) a discard tube must be used to remove the air in the tubing, if only a citrate tube is drawn or is the first tube drawn.

CLH, DDHS, OGH, SDHS, VCH:
1 x 4 mL Li Heparin, whole blood or PST plasma.

Specimen Handling DO NOT centrifuge until tube arrives at testing site. Keep at room temperature.

CLS, BMSH, CMGH, OHWC, HRH: Testing must be done within 24 hours of collection.
CLH, DDHS, OGH, SDHS, VCH: Testing must be done within 2 hours of collection.

Extra-regional:
If arrival of sample will be greater than 24hrs after collection, centrifuge sample, freeze plasma and ship sample frozen.
