Specimen Requirements

Mother: 1 x 4  or 6 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Newborn: Cord blood 1 x 4  or 6 mL red top tube OR 1 x 4  or 6 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Specimen Handling

Cord specimen labelling requirements are:

  • Mother's last and first name.
  • Mother's RHRN/PHN        
  • Baby's last name and gender/first name
  • Baby's RHRN/PHN
  • Must be labelled "Cord Blood"
Additional Information

A Newborn cord specimen is ordered on all cord specimens. Direct Antiglobulin testing only performed on cord blood specimens by physician request. Additional testing is performed on the basis of the DAT results and maternal Rh type.

Cord specimens are retained in Tranfusion Medicine for 7 days.
