Specimen Requirements

1 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tube

Also acceptable: Yellow top (ACD-A or B) tube, or dark green top (sodium or lithium heparin), NOT PST.

Minimum: 4 mL whole blood; a separate specimen is required for this testing (i.e., cannot be combined with any other test requests.

The ACH Biochemical Genetics Lab (403-955-7379) should be notified 24 hours prior to sample collection. This sample will be sent out to a referral lab and must be received by that lab within 10 days or the test will not be performed.

Specimen Handling

DO NOT centrifuge. DO NOT aliquot. DO NOT freeze. Send a copy of the requisition with the specimen.

Send whole blood on ice.  Ensure tube is not in direct contact with ice pack so specimen does not freeze.

If not collected at ACH, transport whole blood immediately to ACH on ice.  Ensure tube is not in direct contact with ice pack.

Sample MUST arrive at the ACH Biochemical Genetics Lab before 13:00 to be shipped out that day.

ACH Accession: Store any specimen received or collected after 14:00 in the fridge.

Additional Information This test is for the investigation of galactokinase deficiency in a patient, either suspected based on clinical presentation (e.g., congenital bilateral cataracts), or found to have excessive galactose in their urine by Sugar Chromatography.  Classical galactosemia (i.e., galactose-1-phosphate uridyl transferase deficiency) is required to be ruled out by a normal Galactosemia Screen and/or Galactose-1-Phosphate Uridyl Transferase result prior to requesting this test or this test may be cancelled.
