Specimen Requirements

2 x 4 mL lavender top EDTA tubes (second EDTA is used to perform a CBC)
AND 1 x 3 mL or 4.5 mL light green (mint) top PST tube. Gold top SST tube is also acceptable.

Pediatric: 2 lavender top EDTA microtainers (second EDTA microtainer is used to perform a CBC).
AND 1 light green (mint) top PST microtainer 


For STAT requests on weekends/off hours ordering physician MUST contact hematopathologist on call to obtain approval for test.

Specimen Handling
Additional Information Screen Includes: CBC, Ferritin, Iron, Iron Binding Capacity, Hemoglobin Electrophoresis, Hgb A, Hgb A2, Hgb F.

Extra-Regional:
- Perform CBC, Ferritin, Iron and Iron Binding Capacity on site; fax results to 403-270-0596.
- Send sample for "Hemoglobin Electrophoresis"
- If Ferritin, Iron and Iron Binding Capacity not tested on site, send samples and separate requisition for these tests only, to CLS.
