Histamine - Urine

Mnemonic UHIST and U24H
Specimen Requirements Collect in container with 15 mL 6N Hydrochloric acid (HCl). HCl must be added to container before collection.  
Refrigerate during collection.

PSC:
Direct patient to obtain container with 15 mL of 6N HCl from CLS RRL Outpatient labs. HCl is not available at PSCs.
Specimen may be dropped off at PSC after collection is complete.

Submit 10 mL aliquot of 24 hour urine collection.
Specimen Handling PSC & RRL:
Transport on ice to DSC.

Extra-regional:
Freeze prior to transport to DSC.

DSC:
Freeze specimens upon receipt in lab; ensure frozen specimens do not thaw.
Additional Information Restrict histamine-rich foods (cheese, wine, red meat0, spinach and tomatoes) for 5 hours prior to and during collection. Antihistamines taken within 48 hours prior to and during collection will interfere with assay.
